Our Progress

The Archers USA Foundation helps states build and strengthen their R3 programs through advanced archery education, hunter education, equipment access, and mentored outdoor experiences. R3—Recruitment, Retention, and Reactivation—focuses on introducing new participants to hunting and shooting sports, keeping them engaged, and welcoming former participants back into the outdoor community.

Varsity Archery is not a one-size-fits-all program. Each participating state has the flexibility to shape its program around its own schools, wildlife resources, educational goals, and R3 priorities. The Foundation works alongside state agencies, educators, instructors, conservation organizations, and funding partners to provide equipment and resources that support each state’s individual needs.

The Archers USA Foundation’s growing footprint now reaches 18 states, with at least 323 participating schools and additional programs continuing to develop.

Through Varsity Archery, students can advance beyond introductory archery by developing their shooting skills, learning safe and responsible equipment use, completing hunter education where applicable, and participating in mentored hunting or outdoor experiences.

These programs help states recruit the next generation of archers, hunters, and conservation supporters. By creating a pathway from school-based archery to hunter education, licensing, and lifelong participation, the Foundation helps states support future hunting license sales and strengthen the outdoor traditions that fund wildlife conservation.

Varsity Archery also actively incorporates archery equipment subject to federal excise tax. These excise tax dollars help support the Wildlife Restoration Program established through the Pittman-Robertson Act, which provides critical funding to states for wildlife conservation, hunter education, public shooting ranges, and related programs.

Every bow placed in a school, every student introduced to advanced archery, and every participant who continues into hunter education or licensed hunting contributes to a larger conservation cycle. Participation supports equipment manufacturers and retailers, excise-tax revenue helps fund state wildlife programs, and license sales provide additional resources for conservation and outdoor recreation.
